Major Project: Work with Production Designer

Role of a Production Designer

Production Designers are the creators behind the camera. Their role can range from creating sets, locations and graphics, to props. The role works closely with the Director and Producer, as they collaborate to bring the finer and more grand details within the Director's vision, to reality.

As our budget is slim due to our student stature, we are always going to be restricted by what we want and what we can actually get. Having such a fantastic location, we are in a good position by focusing our attention on set dressing and props. However, the price of this can rack up so we need to be realistic with our ambitions but still make the best film we can.

The location within the story is Emily and Dan's home. It is a reflection of their relationship and a character in itself, so the detail within it needs to reflect and show this. The home is dominated by Emily's style, organisation and possessions, much like their relationship. The perfect and pristine state of the home is done to make the audience anyone to enter the home feel uncomfortable. The fear of moving something, breaking it or making the house dirty is one that is met by Emily's control.

For this reason, the home as a whole is treated like a character. While an actor usually becomes the character, the production designer dresses the character of the home. As such a finely detailed and meticulously planned area, it requires a role just to reveal its character.

Meeting Zak

On Double Exposure our Production Designer is Zak. His role within our production, as described above requires him and I to work closely to ensure the finer details he will be sourcing and creating fit within my vision for the film and reflect the tone and character of the home.

Our meeting with him was successful as we both spoke about the aesthetic of the film, the story and what we are trying to achieve. Seeing his previous work, it filled us with confidence as we could see that what we required, he had produced before.

I stressed the importance of organisation, order and symmetry within the film and the home location. Reflecting this is key as I pointed to styles of the likes of Wes Anderson and others described within the script. By giving this guidance and vision I am confident from our meeting, his previous work and our combined work ethic that he will help to create a fantastic location.

List

As a rough list it outlines the basic essentials of what we will be needing. Of course this is rough at this point but providing this to the production designer gives a clear idea of the props and styles of props needed within the film.

Collaboration

Within film production collaboration is key. Making a film is no solo effort and by seeking outside help and sourcing people that are great in their field allows for the production value of the film to not only be raised also become a more collaborative effort in which contacts are made. When starting out in short film, it is key to establish, keep and work with new contacts as often as possible.

As films are a group effort, by having Zak on board it allows for more fine detail within the script to find its way into the film and by us collaborating together we only improve the potential of the film.
