Major Project: Costume and Outfits Ideas

Each character within the story is a person with different tastes, styles and way of expressing themselves. It is important to recognize that when writing characters do not begin to merge with one another. It is important they they are each different from one another, and can be viewed as such. They may have common interests and goals but not all the same.

When converting a script to film it is important that each and every detail converts. A strong script can only be a strong film if the details in the script are included. One of these such details is costume.

Having only three characters (Excluding the house), in the story means that they must be easily distinguished between. This isn't as simple as the good guy in the white hat and the bad guy in black, as the story Double Exposure explores is not that simple.

Each character is a strong individual person with a life and story prior to this film. Although the film we are creating is under 15 mins, the character's lives have been going years prior to this, as we explore the short 15 min extract of their lives.

As Hitchcock once said - "Drama is life with the boring bits cut out".

Therefore it should be viewed from the director/writers view that the whole universe in which these characters have lived has been going on for years prior to the opening shot of the film, or words on the script. The audience needs to get an idea exactly who they are, what they are like and what they dress like to begin to understand them as not a character, but a person.

For this reason it is important that their outfits are a reflection of their personality. Therefore we will explore each character:

Emily:

Profession: Photographer

As a photographer Emily is a fashionably coordinated person, while also maintaining practicality in her outfits. She hates the cold and would actively take steps to avoid being cold by wrapping herself in a warm fur hooded parka. In the warmer months she is quick to want a tan and loves the sun, she would rarely cover her arms wearing sleeveless tops and vests.

She would always opt for over dressed over under, while practical, her outfits always reflect her fashionable style. She chooses to immerse herself in the environments she goes to by looking the part. Her dress is her personality, what she wears is a reflection of who she is.

Her main places of shopping would be:

  • Topshop
  • Asos
  • Forever 21
  • Miss Guided

Dan:

Profession: Coach

As a former Rugby player and coach Dan is often seen in a Canterbury Tracksuit when at work. The comfortable and warm attire is perfect for his job as be spends large amounts of time outside training with his team. This depends on the time of year naturally as the tracksuit applies to winter and autumn. At warmer times of the year such as spring and summer, you can comfortbaly bet he is in training shorts, trainers and a comfortable cotton t-shirt.

Practicality and comfort is a key thing for Dan. While he can tidy himself up and look sharp in a Ben Sherman Suit, complete with tie pin and pocket square, his natural home is in a simple pair of soft tracksuit bottoms with a slim fitted t-shirt.

His main places of shopping would be:

  • Canterbury
  • Adidas
  • Topman
  • Asos
  • Calvin Klein

Day 1 Outfit:

The first time we see Dan, he is stepping out of the shower in the comfort of his own home. He is expecting to spend a quiet night in and would waste no time dressing up, however he does have company so would he doesn't go full comfort and opts for something other than comfy trousers. For this reason his attire would be:

Steph:

Profession: Physiotherapist

Steph's working day usually consists of her keeping warm in a waterproof tracksuit as she runs onto a pitch to help injured players, transporting them to her office where she takes the steps to treat and help the players. Hair tied up in a pony tail and running around, she still manages to be an attractive, kind and confident woman.

Although she dresses practical at work, outside of it she is an attractive and beautiful woman. Her blonde hair, physically fit lifestyle make her popular among most men. Her choice of clothing is confident and she can pull off most outfits she wears, however at heart she is truly at home in her pajamas and slippers.

What's Next?

The above outfits are what I imagine thus far, for the purpose of the character and the script. Moving on from this I will be in discussions with the Costume designer for the film. Together we will be looking at work works and what doesn't. Paying attention to cost, style, function and whether it fits with the character.

Following this any changes will be altered within the script, allowing for a further area of detail.
