Pre-Production: We Happy Few Research

'We Happy Few' is a video game set in a dystopia England in which an entire world is manifested on the basis of a single pill. The pill called 'Joy' allows the citizens of the world to view it in a way which makes it appear infinitely better than the dark and depressing world that exists. You play as a character that is 'off their Joy' and sees the world for what it really is, trying to find out why.

One of the most important and interesting things to take away from this game is simply its use of colour. Something i will be looking to emulate when creating our own film.

Use of Colour to reflect Mood and Emotions

It does this by contrasting highly vibrant, high saturated colours when taking the drug to low saturation when off the drug. By creating the visual differentiation allows the player to understand what he/she is seeing and whether it is real or not.

This is something we will be looking to emulate as an indicator to Emily's mental state, contrasting her feelings in control and out of control.

It is also reflective of the emotions, making colour a powerful tool to show feelings without the character not necessarily doing a thing. What i will be trying to emulate is the ability show the world when Emily feels good, through 'rose tinted glasses' and when bad the dull greys of depression.

This video game as an example is an indicator to our film of the possibilities we have when exploring colour as a form of expression. Something that while obviously done before means it is possible and can be done, if done well.
