Professional Practice: Shoot Days

On the day of the shoot I had one other crew member, Megan Waters who helped me by being sound technician, however she further helped me with things such as consistency through shots and a second pair of creative eyes as she was able to suggest shots and coverage on the day in ways that i had previously not thought possible.

We filmed over both days to ensure that we got as much footage as possible. We were aware that the weather was forecast to be inconsistent with sunny and raining intervals. Caused some problems with consistency between shots but ultimately this was not too much of an issue as the film would be cut as a montage so there was some lee way in regards to difference in shots.

My plan was to get as much footage as possible and fulfill the brief given to me by the Dockyard to the best of my abilities. I felt that the more footage I got the better. My plan was:

First Day Plan
  • Get coverage/general shots of Car & Bike Area
  • Get coverage/general shots of Steampunk Village
  • Get Establishing shots
  • Get Footage of moving and stationary locomotives
  • Get coverage of Stage acts and audience
  • Get coverage of families and general shots of public/families
Second Day Plan
  • Get Interview and further coverage of Blue Brother's band
  • Get Interview and further coverage of Steampunk enthusiast
  • Get further footage of Car & Bike Area
  • Get further footage of public
  • Get further footage of steam locomotives
I had questions prepared in case we could not get access to those we initially planned on speaking too, the questions where as below:

Unfortunately, due to weather changes some of the footage we got was unusable. Luckily however, the poor weather mainly took place on the first day of filming, meaning on the second day we were able to pick up on shots that went wrong the day before. Allowing us to have a second chance at getting some good shots.

Ultimately, the shooting days went well if not for some poor weather on the first day. However, the Dockyard provided an excellent venue for filming allowing us to be very experimental and creative with our shots. The setting busy public presence provided the perfect environment for filming an effective promo. Hopefully something that become clear within our final edit.
