Fiction Adaptation: New Idea

Seeing as my initial idea went south, I have had to quickly come up with an alternative story that can not only fulfill the brief of adapting the poem but also be just as good as my original idea. Whilst the original idea went very literal to the poem, for my second attempt I have decided to go in the complete other direction and adapt the poem to be different entirely.

The plot line I have come up with is to use the poem as dialogue within a therapy session for the main character dealing with multiple personality disorder. The main character will be seeking therapy where he believes he is a mixed race man growing up in the 1980s. Scenes of the story take place within a therapy room and on stage to create a theater styled performance from the main character in which he plays out his personalities as if acting.

Inspiration

My inspiration for the therapy scenes has been influenced by a couple of films, The main of which however is Psycho, in which Norman Bates' mother personality has completely taken over and he sits alone in the police cell as he talks to himself within his own mind about how they are watching and how he "wouldn't hurt a fly". It is a very powerful and interestingly played scene in which I would like to encapsulate a similar style to better understand my main character.

Inspiration for the stage scenes came about from the film Bronson, in which Tom Hardy plays Charles Bronson in a scene where he performs within his own imagination on stage as he believes himself to be that of a performer. This scene is what I want to emulate because is allows for a very different method of storytelling. By situating the imagination scene to be on stage it allows for a degree of the surreal, to get an insight into the mind of the main character and his imagination, how he thinks and feels.

What I aim to achieve

By using these films as inspiration i want to create a mixture of emotions depending on the location, that of the real world being vulnerable and worrying to the character but his imagination on stage for him to feel untouchable, almost like a king without a care in the world.

This can be achieved through the framing of shots and with changes in lighting focus and where is lit. By creating this theatre-esque style I believe a certain surreal style can be achieved.
