Studio Production: Workshop

In preparation for our live shoot within the studio we took part in a short practice workshop to get an idea for camera set up, contestant seating and also allow us to see our set up physically rather than drawings.

While in the workshop we only had two cameras rather than the five we will have for our actual shoot, we were able to get the same angles and shot types that we are looking to achieve in the real production.

Set up wise we were restricted but the bare principles are there and the set up of the studio was roughly how we imagine it to be.

Today's workshop was a learning curve and a step forward in the right direction. A way for myself to see the set up in bare bones an a way in which i can now imagine when setting up the camera locations and movements.

There are a few areas I need to take into consideration in the future such as:
  • Remember as director, i am not just directing the camera locations and vision mixer, i am directing the entire show. This means talent need further direction, by being told the my directorial vision for the show and being briefed before about what can be expected throughout the show.
  • Expand my knowledge by researching 'blocking'
  • Work closely with talent, especially if inexperienced
Things to do:
  • More research into multi-camera direction
  • More research into live direction
  • Mock up practice shoots between workshops
  • Reconsider camera set ups after blocking research
