Digital News Production: Interview Shoot
We chose to shoot our interview in the same place as our studio piece as it had so much space that we could afford to dress the set to completely transform the location into something stylistic and interesting.
Looking at set ups from YouTube channels such as Rooster Teeth, and their set up for podcasts, we wanted to create something similar. Something gaming themed and visually good looking to keep the viewers attention. We wanted to make the set fit with our channel and make it look as professional as possible. For the set we had a lot of props:
- Two Sofas
- Coffee Table
- Two Desk Tables
- Bookshelf
- Two large benches as shelves
- Monitor which was green screened to show our channels logo
- Decorative accessories, like cushions
- Gaming Items such as a PS4, a variety of different console games, guitar hero guitar and drum kit, controllers, decorative gaming medal and a PC Gamer magazine.
Shot wise we kept it simple. From the image above you can see our two shot, which was accompanied with singles of Mat and Francesca. We managed to get some great looking shots with those from actually speaking to reaction shots. The great setting helps to create good looking shots with a nice depth of field.
As you can also see the green-screened monitor also came into play and once the edit is complete we can get the logo in between them to make for a professional looking environment.
We had a couple of problems on the shoot...
- Our clip mics that we had wired up to both our presenter and interviewee where interfeering with one another which caused some static and distortion when listening to the audio. We decided that when filming in the singles we would mic up the person we are filming and not the other, this way the distortion stopped.
- As on our previous shoot outside noise was an issue as builders had started work outside drilling so we had to play our time right and go between drilling and when the builders had their breaks. However, the footage did not seem to pick up the noise too badly when reviewing the shots so we were okay.
However aside from these problems our shoot was another success. We got good footage with good audio and did all of this a lot faster than the shoot before while it was in no way rushed. Our presenter asked great questions clearly and our interviewee responded with clear, understandable and intelligent answers.
What I would change
- Once again if a sound proof room was available then we could have used it to prevent outside noise.
- Maybe if we had more decorative material the set could have been even better.
- If we knew prior about the clip mic issue, done something differently with the way of recording.
However, all in all... Happy!
