Fiction Adaptation: Essay Jump off

To begin with I have chosen my essay question which I will answer, it is...

'Discuss the view that "with a successful adaptation, the original work is transformed into something new and different, although retaining many traces of what it was formerly" with reference to at least one text adapted for broadcast television.'

The text that has been adapted and I have chosen to reference is the Arthur Conan Doyle stories of Sherlock Holmes, adapted into the BBC series Sherlock.

The stories of Sherlock Holmes have been adapted almost countless times on the big screen and small, even taking place in modern America. However the adaptation from Victorian to Modern London within Sherlock could be argued as a very successful adaptation of the stories. The history behind the characters and the author himself provide me with plenty of research material, also even the settings and themes provide angles to discuss the essay question in great detail. The popularity of the character 'Sherlock' stretches across the globe and it's fan base would be very difficult to please, given their devotion to the stories and the characters themselves.

Whats next?

  1. This is a good overview, but I need to know your reading list and research plan. Let me know. Essay focus is a good choice as there is plenty to talk about. My next lecture will help you with this in particular.
