Commission: Presentation and Script Feedback

Alex and myself have been working recently on a short presentation and script to give to Helen and Simon to help them and for them to help us understand our image and what it is we are planning to do.

For our presentation we briefly spoke about concussion, masculinity and bravado within sport, especially Rugby. We explained how dangerous concussion can be and the effects it can cause and also how masculinity and bravado has its pride of place within rugby as players refuse to admit they are hurt as the do not want to let the side down or dent their ego. This idea that "If I get hurt by the other player he is more of a man than I am".

Helen and Simon raised an interesting point that the more exciting story is the focus on Masculinity and Bravado within Rugby. They expressed that there should be science and medical talk with regards to concussion but for it to be kept tamed, and to prevent the documentary becoming too information heavy. This is a good and interesting point as it means we focus on the players emotions rather than cold hard facts.

We told them about our sources and players effected and were more than happy with our findings. Alex has also come up with some brilliant ideas for filming with the Go Pro cameras to get some interesting POV shots. We are both very keen on using 7D cameras for the mobile actions shots and Sony EX1 cameras for static work, however the issue Helen had with this was as the 7D cameras were small, they were less stable and if they were to be used with a fig rig it would be virtually impossible to adjust zoom and focus while holding the rig. This is an interesting point so I think our plan is to use Go Pro cameras for moving action shots, 7D for static action shots (on tripod) and Sony EX1 cameras for fixed interview shots.

For our script Helen sat down with us and helped us organised exactly what we want to do. As a way of editing before we have even filmed i found it incredibly useful and we now know roughly what we want from our film and how it should look.

  1. This is great research - as we discussed, remember you can stunt up your 'rugby match' to get the pov shots you need, even a 'scrum' type shot (of course carefully designed to avoid damage or problems for your players or the kit!)
